About Argentina:
Besides the fact that Argentina is one
of the best travel values in the world, the beauty of Argentina lies in
the fact that it is full of Argentines, which are arguably the most
beautiful people in the world. Walking down the street is like being in
the middle of a fashion show. 85% of the population is of European
origin and most are descendants of Italians and Spaniards. In a country
of 36 million almost one half live in the capital, Buenos Aires.

Needless
to say, there is never a dull moment in Buenos Aires as the city never
sleeps. It is full of a contagious energy that you can take with you at
the end of your study abroad program. Here you can find a vigor for
life that you will see in few other places, such as New York City,
Paris or Madrid.
Argentina is probably most famous for its asados (barbecues), Tango,
futbol, Borges, economic/political history and Buenos Aires.
The asados are legendary and they
do live up to their expectations. Please be aware that the homemade
pastas, pizza and ice cream will leave your mouth watering as well.
The Tango will captivate you and
help you with insight into the culture. Whether you already know how to
Tango or have no idea what it is, there are excellent places to learn.
Argentina won the World Cup in 1978
and 1986 with the help of their national icon, Diego Maradona. Maradona
is often mentioned as the best soccer player ever (at least in
Argentina!). It is a lot of fun to go and see a futbol game, either La
Boca Juniors or River Plate, in Buenos Aires. There are other sports
that abound in Argentina as well: tennis, rugby polo, trekking, skiing
and golf. All of these sports are readily available or you can go to
one of the countless gyms to break a sweat.

Jorge Luis Borges is the most renowned Argentine writer and poet having
written the unsurpassable short story collection “Labyrinths” and the
playful “A Universal History of Infamy”. There are other
internationally accomplished authors as well. Ernesto Sabato wrote the
psychological novel exploring the people and places of Buenos Aires,
“On Heroes and Tombs”. Manuel Puig wrote “Kiss of the Spider Woman” and
“Betrayed by Rita Hayworth” which focus on the ambiguous role of pop
culture in Argentina. No list of authors is complete without Julio
Cortazar and Osvaldo Soriano.
At the start of the
1900’s Argentina was one of the world’s richest countries. But even
with the abundance of natural resources and a highly educated
population; political corruption, rampant tax evasion and ill advised
monetary policies led to a culmination at the end of 2001 when
Argentina saw five presidents in two weeks. The
situation has stabilized but as a result the
local peso was devalued and Argentina is now one of the best travel
values in the world.
What can be said about Buenos
Aires? For starters, every single person should visit this city if
given the opportunity. It is nothing short of spectacular. The locals,
called Portenos, are gregarious and known for their cockiness. There is
little love lost within other Latin American countries for the Portenos
but is it wrong to be proud of whom you are? During your program you
can form your own opinions. After all everyone is envious of the best!
Buenos Aires is made up of distinct and flavorful neighborhoods, the
most famous of which are La Boca, San Telmo, Palermo, Belgrano and
Recoleta. The city is very walker friendly and it is easy to explore
the bustling streets, tree lined avenues, classic cafes, corner bars
and stylish restaurants on foot. Taxis are readily available and a
bargain but to experience more of the Argentine culture the city buses
and subte (subway) are very efficient and thorough.
A typical day in Argentina starts with breakfast that consists of tea
or coffee and pastries or toast. Lunch is eaten around 2:00 pm and most
restaurants have economical lunch menus that include a main dish,
drink, coffee and dessert. At around 7:00 pm there is a snack with
Mate. Mate is an herbal tea that is drank socially out of a gourd with
a straw. Sharing a mate is a special expression of acceptance but for
many students it is an acquired taste. Then dinner is eaten around
10:00 pm with everyone in the family together.
