Is
Chile and Argentina a safe place to study?
Yes, Chile and Argentina are the safest
countries in South America.
Should I have my student
give me a Power of Attorney before s/he departs?
We recommend that you have your student sign a Power of Attorney form
giving you or whoever is to administer his/her finances (including tax
returns) during the study abroad session the ability to cash checks,
withdraw money from the student's checking account, etc.
Can I access my student's
university financial records while they are abroad?
Not without prior arrangements. Your student must check with their home
university business and/or financial aid office for any paperwork that
needs to be signed in order for you to access their accounts. We
suggest that any financial aid checks be direct deposited.
What are the possible ways
to communicate with my student while they are abroad?
Internet
access is inexpensive and readily available.
He/she
may have mail sent to them at their new address or to the
ICambio office at the program site. Any package with a declared value
of $500 or more will be held up by customs and he/she will have to
retrieve it personally and pay importation taxes.
Students
can call you with inexpensive prepaid phone cards purchased
when they arrive in their host country. They also have the option of
buying an inexpensive cell phone that allows them to receive phone
calls from abroad at no charge to them.
How will my student
access money?
We recommend that your
student use an ATM card while abroad. ATM’s usually provide the best
exchange rates and he/she will not have to carry large amounts of money
around with them. Please check with their bank to find out about the
charges for accessing money while abroad. The banks in Chile and
Argentina do not charge for ATM use. Many banks allow online banking
for easy tracking of student spending.
Under what conditions will
ICambio cancel a program?
Our students are directly enrolled
in existing major universities abroad, and ICambio would not cancel an
individual university program unless that university cancelled or
suspended its operations.
As for evacuating students from a
country, our policy is to follow the U.S. Department of State in its
public announcements to U.S. citizens worldwide. If U.S. citizens were
recalled from a Chile or Argentina, we would require our students to
return home as well.
What if there is an
incident in Chile or Argentina?
We will communicate with students
via e-mail or telephone through our emergency communication network. We
will notify parents by e-mail or telephone.
Can I visit my student?
We recommend that you come at the
end of the program. By then you will have an excellent tour guide. You
will need a valid passport and a tourist visa. Please check with the
nearest Argentine or Chilean embassy for details.
How do I contact my student
in case of an emergency at home?
First try calling your student. If
they do not answer please call the ICambio office.
How will my son or daughter
benefit from a study abroad experience?
Part of a student's
education is to understand the world around them. By studying abroad,
they benefit from more than traveling; they spend an extended time
living and studying in a new culture and environment. Studying with
ICambio provides them a supportive environment where they can process
the immense changes they will experience during and after their
sojourn. Not only will a study experience in South America develop your
son or daughter into a bilingual world citizen, it will also hopefully
affect you and your family in positive ways. Your son or daughter will
meet new friends from around the world and create contacts for the
future.
