While abroad:

What is the local transportation like?

The local buses and subways are readily available for moving around in the cities. This is a very inexpensive way to travel like a local. Taxis are also available for a reasonable price. Only take taxis clearly identified with official markings.

Does ICambio have emergency procedures?

The safety of students participating in ICambio programs is our first priority. Each ICambio program has an on-site director and staff, who have emergency policies and procedures. These are presented to students during their on-site orientation.

Prior to departure, ICambio sends all students information regarding general emergency procedures abroad, travel and safety tips, emergency information cards, and a student handbook with emergency contact information. ICambio also monitors the State Department travel advisories.

How will I access money?

We recommend using an ATM card while abroad. ATM’s usually provide the best exchange rates and you will not have to carry large amounts of money around with you. Please check with your bank to find out about their charges for accessing money while abroad. You can use your ATM card, with a four-digit pin number, at ATMs if your card is approved for international use.

You should also carry some US dollars and traveler checks to have with you in case of an emergency. Both your departure airport and your arrival airport abroad will have exchange desks available. Plus there are numerous exchange houses where you can exchange your money with your passport.

Will I have access to Internet?

Internet access is available from the host university abroad or commercially in Internet cafes for usually less than $1.00 per hour.

How can I receive mail abroad?

You may have mail sent to you at your new address or at the ICambio office at the program site. Any package with a declared value of $500 or more will be held up by customs and you will have to retrieve it personally and pay importation taxes.

How can I make and receive phone calls abroad?

It is best to purchase a prepaid phone card upon arrival where they offer very inexpensive rates.

If you live with a host family, you are able to receive phone calls on their home line and make phone calls while using your prepaid phone card. You should discuss this with your host family upon arrival.

You also have the option of buying an inexpensive cell phone. You are able to receive phone calls from abroad at no charge to you.

Will I have time to travel?

You will have time to travel. You may travel on weekends as you please. If you want to do extensive travel, we suggest you wait until after your program ends.
